What is Hanal Pixán?

Hanal Pixán, or “food for the souls,” is a special Maya tradition celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd. During this time, the deceased are believed to reunite with their loved ones, returning home to be honored with offerings prepared by their families.

The Three-Day Celebration

  • October 31st is known as “U Hanal Palal” and is dedicated to deceased children.

  • November 1st is called “U Hanal Nucuch Uinicoob” and is dedicated to deceased adults.

  • November 2nd is “U Hanal Pixanoob,” which is dedicated to all the faithful departed (both children and adults).

According to tradition, some souls, known as “Ánima Sola” (Lonely Souls), have no family or offerings. For them, a small, simple altar is placed in a corner of the house with offerings of all kinds.

Honoring the Deceased

Altars are set up in advance with food, sweets, offerings, and the deceased’s favorite belongings.

On November 30th, the souls are bid farewell with prayers and special offerings like sweet bread, chocolate, and mukbil pollo (a type of tamale), all tied up as if for a journey. At night, leftover candles are lit on stone fences (albarradas) to illuminate the souls’ path on their return to the afterlife.
